Perkinil IM/IV Injection works by decreasing the activity of excess acetylcholine in the brain.

Side Effects of Perkinil 10mg/2ml Injection

Common side effects include:

• Dry mouth (most common)
• Mydriasis (dilated pupils), blurred vision
• Gastrointestinal issues (nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, constipation)
• Rarely, allergic reactions (e.g., rash) or muscular weakness
• High doses may cause vertigo, confusion, or hallucinations

Indication of Perkinil 10mg/2ml Injection

Perkinil (Procyclidine hydrochloride) is used as an adjunctive treatment for all forms of Parkinsonian syndrome. It is particularly effective in the symptomatic treatment of:

• Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (paralysis agitans)
• Postencephalitic Parkinsonism
• Arteriosclerotic Parkinsonism

Additionally, Perkinil is utilized to control troublesome extrapyramidal symptoms such as pseudo parkinsonism, acute dystonic reactions, and akathisia induced by neuroleptic drugs (e.g., phenothiazine derivatives)

Pharmacology

Procyclidine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Perkinil, is an antimuscarinic agent used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It works by correcting the relative cholinergic excess that is thought to result from dopamine deficiency in Parkinson's disease. Procyclidine is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly disappears from tissues. Following intravenous administration, it begins to act within 5 to 20 minutes, with effects lasting up to 4 hours.

Dosage & Administration of Perkinil 10mg/2ml Injection

Intramuscular or Intravenous Injection:

• Administer 5-10 mg, repeat if necessary after 20 minutes.
• The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

The safety and efficacy of Perkinil in pediatric patients have not been established. Its use in children should be considered only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Interaction

• The anticholinergic effects of procyclidine may be enhanced by other anticholinergic agents, such as amantadine.
• The absorption of ketoconazole may be reduced if taken concurrently with procyclidine.

Contraindications

Procyclidine should be used with caution in:

• Children and elderly patients
• Individuals with diarrhea, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, urinary retention, hepatic or renal impairment

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of procyclidine during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. Therefore, its use in these populations should be carefully weighed against potential risks.

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution is advised in patients with hepatic or renal impairment, and children, the elderly, pregnant, or breastfeeding women.
• Patients with mental disorders may experience a psychotic episode when Perkinil is used to treat extrapyramidal side effects of neuroleptic drugs.
• Perkinil should not be withdrawn abruptly to avoid rebound Parkinsonism symptoms.
